Honors Biology Course Syllabus

Course Content:  
The goal of this course is to provide a thorough understanding of the concepts of biology using the textbook and hands-on activities. This course was constructed to exceed the Delaware State Science Standards. The themes of biology to be covered in this course are as follows:

  • Ecology and Sustainability
  • Living Cells
  • Genetics
  • Evolution

  • The website is used to distribute, collect and share all class assignments.
  • Students have access to the website 24/7 through any internet enables device including smart phones.
  • Students have access to a detailed online grade book on this site which they are encouraged to share with their parents.

Textbooks:
This course uses a variety of printed textbooks and online resources. Student may check out a copy of the textbook, however all textbooks are available as e-books thought the course website.

Requested supplies:
Students are asked to bring the following materials to class every day.

  • 1/2 spiral notebook or larger
  • No. 2 Pencil

Grading Policy:
There will be three units each marking period and each one is worth 100 points. The final marking period grade is the calculated average of the three units.

Grading Policy:

The Brandywine School District 10-point grading scale will be used for grading students’ work.
A= 90-100
B= 80-89
C= 70-79
D= 60-69
F= 59 and below

Beginning in the year 2017-18, all Brandywine School District teachers will enter grades into Home Access as formative or summative measures.
Weighting will be as follows:

  • Formative: 30%

Examples of these assignments may include but are not limited to: quizzes, drafts of writing, homework (graded for understanding), classwork practice worksheets, questions at the end of a reading, graphic organizers, and anything in the early stages of learning concepts/content.

  • Summative: 70%

This category may include but is not limited to: tests, common district assessments, projects, quizzes, quarterly assessments, performance tasks, research papers, and lab reports.

Labs and Experiments:
Students will be required to earn a set number of points completing science labs each marking period. Students are provided with a large selection of labs to choose from and can work on them during the designated class periods and after school when the the lab is open. The lab grade is recorded as the third unit in each marking period.

Late Work Policy:
All classwork should be submitted in a timely manner. Late work will not be accepted after the unit test date unless there was an extended and excused absence.
